Downey Mayor Mario Trujillo Launches Re-election Campaign

Downey, CA - Wednesday May 22, 2024 - Mayor Mario Trujillo has officially launched his re-election campaign, outlining his key priorities to further enhance the city's progress and prosperity. Mayor Trujillo, known for his dedication to the community, is committed to addressing critical issues that impact our community. 


As he embarks on his re-election campaign, Mayor Trujillo has identified the following four essential priorities to make Downey a safer community and continue to improve the quality of life of all Downey residents. 


Mayor Trujillo's vision includes enhancing the overall quality of life in Downey by investing in infrastructure, parks, recreation, and community programs that promote wellness, inclusivity, and a strong sense of belonging for all residents: 


1. Public Safety: Mayor Mario Trujillo is committed to providing unwavering support to our local Police and Fire departments to ensure they have the resources needed to protect and serve the community effectively. During his initial term in office, he directed staff to purchase two new Fire Engines to replace outdated ones from our Downey Fire Department. 


Mayor Trujillo introduced a $25,000 recruitment incentive for Lateral Police Officers. He enhanced security and upkeep of the Downtown Downey public parking garage by repainting the structure, adding brighter lights, and installing security cameras with license plate readers on each floor level and entrance. 


Mayor Trujillo enacted an ordinance banning the illegal possession of detached catalytic converters, effectively reducing thefts in the city. Acknowledging the significance of preserving Downey as a secure city, he remains steadfast in prioritizing public safety above all other concerns.

 

2. Economic Development: Under Mayor Trujillo's leadership, the City of Downey earned prestigious budget awards for its balanced fiscal year 2023-24 budget. Mayor Trujillo played a key role in bringing Sprouts Grocery to Downey, set to open in October 2024. 


Simultaneously, Mayor Trujillo values small businesses as the foundation of Downey's local economy. He initiated a Spend Local campaign to boost small businesses and events in the area. Furthermore, he improved the city's online permitting system to facilitate residential and business development processes for commercial and residential applicants.


Mayor Trujillo is dedicated to advancing economic growth and development in Downey by attracting new businesses, generating high-paying job opportunities, and cultivating a vibrant local economy that serves the best interests of all Downey residents. 


3. Infrastructure: Mayor Trujillo has advocated for significant infrastructure investments in Downey. Over the past three years, more than $13.5 million has been allocated to repave key streets like Florence Avenue and Firestone Boulevard, with over $27.6 million dedicated to residential street repaving. Additionally, over $1.4 million has been invested in sidewalk enhancements, and an alley beautification program has been launched, with over $485,000 invested since Mayor Trujillo's election in 2020. 


Mayor Trujillo initiated the Street Lighting program, which assists in funding the installation of street lights in residential areas lacking illumination to enhance safety and walkability after dark. He also authorized the implementation of a beautification plan for Woodruff Avenue, including new median landscaping, a monument sign, and a maintenance program. 


Mayor Trujillo's forward-thinking approach to infrastructure has not only revitalized Downey's streets but also fostered a safer and more inviting environment for residents. These proactive measures underscore his dedication to building a thriving and sustainable community for all to enjoy and prosper in. He will continue to improve Downey streets, alleys and sidewalks. 


4. Quality of Life: Mayor Trujillo's tenure has seen the approval of projects aimed at unequivocally enhancing the quality of life for all Downey residents. These include the upcoming opening of a community garden, the establishment of a second dog park, and the introduction of a discount program for families with multiple children attending the City's summer camp and aquatic classes. These initiatives underscore his commitment to creating a more vibrant and inclusive community for all to enjoy. 


Mayor Trujillo instituted the Community Based Organization Grant program, allocating $100,000 to Downey nonprofits. He launched the Team Up 2 Clean events to enhance residential areas through beautification and educate residents on City resources. Additionally, he sanctioned an ordinance to govern oversized vehicle parking and introduced a permit program for residents. These initiatives highlight his dedication to fostering a more engaged, clean, and regulated community for all Downey residents to benefit from. 


Mayor Trujillo's proactive measures demonstrate his commitment to empowering local organizations, enhancing community engagement, and improving the quality of life for all Downey residents.
